Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, has announced a 90-day extension of Operation DELTA SANITY, aimed at combating oil theft and related crimes in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. The operation, initially launched on January 6, 2024, has shown significant results in tackling illicit activities undermining the nation’s oil production.
The decision to extend the operation aligns with directives from President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to eradicate crude oil theft and bolster Nigeria’s economic output.
Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director Naval Information, highlighted the operational scope of DELTA SANITY, involving personnel, platforms, helicopters, and UAVs in aggressive surveillance and interdiction efforts across the Niger Delta. Immediate successes included the recovery of stolen products, dismantling of illegal refining sites, and arrests of suspects, prompting the initial extension in April 2024.
Rear Admiral Samson Bura, Commander Task Group, reported significant achievements since the April extension, including the arrest of 22 suspects, deactivation of 122 illegal refinery sites, and seizure of large quantities of crude oil and illicitly refined products. Operations also led to the deactivation of numerous boats, dugout pits, and storage tanks, along with the arrest of six vessels and confiscation of refinery construction materials.
The extension underscores the ongoing success and necessity of Operation DELTA SANITY in combating oil-related crimes and ensuring maritime security in the region. Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, speaking on behalf of Vice Admiral Ogalla aboard Nigerian Navy Ship OKPABANA in Onne, Rivers State, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for steadfast support to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Operation DELTA SANITY continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources and maritime environment, contributing to national security and economic stability.
