Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing the newly approved national minimum wage of N70,000. Following a closed-door meeting with labor leaders, the governor announced that preparations are underway to commence payments.
Uzodimma emphasized the necessity of the new minimum wage, citing the rising cost of living and global economic conditions as key factors driving the need for better incentives for workers. He remarked, “The current cost of living necessitates the need to create better incentives for the working community,” and highlighted the government’s intent to cushion the effects of hardship faced by workers.
The governor indicated that discussions are ongoing to determine the modalities for payment, ensuring that the new wage benefits not only junior workers but also senior staff. He stated, “What is needed is to work out the modalities on the consequential adjustments,” ensuring that the incentives will be distributed equitably.
Uzodimma reassured workers that, despite the challenges of limited government resources, the implementation of the minimum wage is a priority. He expressed confidence that everything would be resolved within the next two months.
Uche Nwigwe, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Imo State, commended the governor for his supportive stance towards workers. He promised to expedite discussions regarding the wage implementation, assuring that Imo workers will soon receive their rightful dues.
With this commitment, the Imo State government aims to enhance worker productivity and provide quality services to the state’s residents.
