Nigerian Resident Doctors End Strike, Resume Work While Monitoring Government Response

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced that its members will return to work starting Monday, September 2, 2024, following a seven-day nationwide warning strike. This industrial action was initiated in response to the abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. The strike, which began last Monday, aimed to demand immediate action for her rescue.

NARD stated that it will evaluate the Federal Government’s progress on addressing its demands over the next three weeks. Despite the government’s threat to enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against the striking doctors, NARD remained resolute in its stance.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD President, indicated that while there has been some improvement in the government’s engagement, the association will continue to monitor the situation closely. “We are suspending the strike now and will be meeting to review the progress the government has made in the next three weeks,” Abdullahi said. “Our members will resume work at 8 am on Monday. We are hopeful that the government will maintain its current approach.”
