The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms known as Foula Condoms. The alert came after officials from the agency’s Post-Marketing Surveillance directorate discovered these condoms, packaged in threes, in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State.
NAFDAC emphasized that Foula Condoms are not registered for use in Nigeria, and the product’s labeling does not meet the requirement of being in the English language. The agency highlighted the importance of using registered condoms, which are proven effective for preventing unintended pregnancies and protecting against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
The agency warned that the illegal sale of unregistered condoms poses significant risks, as the safety, quality, and efficacy of such products cannot be assured. It cautioned that poor-quality condoms can lead to leaks or breakage, thus failing to provide adequate protection.
To combat the issue, NAFDAC has instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove these unregistered products from circulation. Importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers are urged to remain vigilant and ensure that all medical products and devices are sourced from authorized suppliers. They are also encouraged to report any suspected sale of substandard or falsified products to NAFDAC through their office or contact number.
Healthcare professionals and patients are additionally advised to report any adverse events or side effects related to medicinal products or devices to the nearest NAFDAC office or via the agency’s online reporting platforms.
