Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has spoken out against the persistent criticism she faces over her fashion choices, particularly from Nigerians who often link her outfits to her age.
During an appearance on the Receipts podcast, the 44-year-old singer and single mother candidly addressed the backlash she receives for wearing revealing clothing, including bikinis. “They age-shame me every single day,” Savage said. “They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body.”
Savage pointed out the cultural double standards in how women in their 40s are perceived, drawing a comparison to American pop icon Beyoncé. “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans don’t age-shame her. They say, ‘For her age, Black don’t crack.’ It’s celebrated when you look good as you age,” she explained, highlighting the contrasting societal attitudes.
Critics of Savage’s fashion choices often argue that her outfits could negatively impact her son. However, Savage dismissed these concerns, emphasizing the empowering message she believes her son will take away from her confidence. “They always say, ‘When her son grows up, he’s going to see this.’ My son will see it and think, ‘My mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.’”
Savage’s comments resonate with the broader debate surrounding societal expectations placed on women, particularly in African cultures, as they age. As one of Afrobeats’ most prominent figures, Savage has often used her platform to challenge traditional norms, asserting her individuality and redefining beauty standards in the entertainment industry.
Her remarks have sparked conversations on social media, with fans and critics alike debating the cultural dynamics and gendered expectations around age, motherhood, and fashion. Despite the backlash, Tiwa Savage remains unapologetic, proving once again that she is determined to chart her own course, both as an artist and as a woman.
