Beloved South African actress and Afropop singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51 after a brief illness, her family confirmed on Tuesday.
Khumalo, celebrated for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, was a household name in South Africa’s entertainment industry. Her musical journey began in the 1980s, and she is widely recognized for her hit song Live My Life as well as her collaborations with legendary South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.
Her sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, shared the heartbreaking news with SABC TV, saying, “My sister was sick. She had a short illness, and we truly believed she was recovering. But this morning, it became clear she hadn’t fully healed. She was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, she was pronounced dead.”
The nature of her illness has not been disclosed.
Khumalo’s legacy extends beyond her musical achievements. She also made her mark on South African television, appearing in popular series and captivating audiences with her versatility. Her contributions to the arts include multiple solo albums and a notable role as a backup singer for Brenda Fassie, which helped define her early career.
She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, a rising star in the South African music scene, and her son, Thabo Khumalo.
