Nigerian singer Seun Kuti recently opened up about his relationship with his late father, the legendary Fela Kuti, during an appearance on the Zero Conditions podcast. Seun likened his connection with his father to winning the lottery, expressing immense gratitude and joy over their time together.
In a candid interview, Seun explained that he does not let public opinions about his father bother him. “Who gets upset when they win the lottery?” he laughed. “Show me one person that won the lottery and said, ‘I’m angry, what the heck?'”
Seun reflected on the relatively brief period he spent with Fela before his father’s death, but emphasized that those years were profoundly meaningful. “I won the daddy lottery. My father is still my favorite person in the world. Even though I only had 14 years with him, they were 14 incredible years. He was my best friend and a very cool dad.”
He also shared insights into his privileged upbringing, noting how he was pampered as a child. Seun revealed an amusing fact: he has never done his own laundry. “You don’t know how spoiled I was growing up. To this day, I still haven’t done any laundry,” he admitted. “I was so well taken care of that even while traveling, I would sleep in British Airways and dream about laundry. I would wake up thinking about how I would wash my clothes, only to remember washing machines and fall back asleep.”
Seun Kuti’s reflections offer a glimpse into his deep admiration for his father and the unique circumstances of his upbringing.
