Selena Gomez Discusses Medical Challenges and Future Parenthood

In a heartfelt interview with Vanity Fair, Selena Gomez has revealed the medical challenges that prevent her from carrying her own children. The singer and actress shared that her health conditions pose significant risks for both herself and a potential baby, which has been a source of deep grief for her.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez, 32, disclosed. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put both my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez has previously addressed her health struggles. In 2017, she publicly shared that she underwent a kidney transplant due to lupus, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks normal tissue. This condition, though manageable with medication, has been a persistent challenge. Additionally, in 2022, Gomez mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone that the medication she takes for bipolar disorder could complicate a safe pregnancy—a topic also explored in her documentary, My Mind and Me.

Despite these obstacles, Gomez remains hopeful about other avenues to parenthood, such as surrogacy and adoption. She expressed optimism about these options, stating, “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen like it does for everyone else. I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

Gomez added, “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll be a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Currently, Gomez is in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco.
