Interior Minister Orders Investigation into Allegations of Bribery in Nigerian Correctional Service

On Wednesday, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, announced the launch of a comprehensive investigation into claims of bribery within the Nigerian Correctional Service. This directive follows a controversial voice note shared by Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, which featured Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky. In the recording, Bobrisky alleged that following his conviction for abusing naira notes in April, he was promised a six-month sentence in a private apartment, allegedly arranged by his godfather in collusion with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Human rights attorney Femi Falana (SAN) has denied any connection to Bobrisky and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to VeryDarkMan to retract his statements linking Falana to Bobrisky’s case. In a letter from Falana’s legal representatives, they stated that he has never spoken to Bobrisky regarding his alleged pardon or any related matters.

In the viral voice note, purportedly featuring Bobrisky, he claimed that jealousy played a role in his situation and recounted how he anticipated community service or a fine but received a prison sentence instead. He described a phone call from his godfather, who assured him he would not serve time in prison and arranged for him to stay in an apartment near the correctional facility. Bobrisky also alleged that he paid a N15 million bribe to officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to drop money laundering charges against him.

The Interior Minister condemned these allegations, asserting that any misconduct would be met with strict consequences. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability, announcing that a special investigative team led by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani would be formed to thoroughly examine the claims.

In a parallel development, Falana’s legal team has reached out to VeryDarkMan regarding his statements, demanding a retraction and apology within a day or face legal action. The letter accused VeryDarkMan of disseminating defamatory remarks that tarnish Falana’s reputation, suggesting he engaged in unethical behavior. The lawyers insisted on the importance of credible reporting and warned of potential legal remedies if the demands are not met promptly.
