The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has delivered a firm warning to individuals and groups promoting a military takeover in Nigeria, stating that such actions are considered treasonable under the Constitution.
Reaffirming its loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the military emphasized its commitment to upholding democracy in the nation. In a statement by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ made it clear that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) will remain focused on their essential duties, which include safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security.
Gusau specifically addressed the recent advocacy for military intervention, highlighted in a viral video, and reiterated that such actions are unconstitutional. He stressed that the AFN is unwavering in its dedication to democracy and fully supports President Tinubu’s government.
Noting the relative peace currently enjoyed in Nigeria, Gusau attributed it to the President’s backing of the military and the commitment of its leadership. He assured the public that the military, in conjunction with other security agencies, is prepared to take decisive action against any attempts at unconstitutional changes.
“The military remains focused on fulfilling its statutory responsibilities to protect the nation’s integrity,” he stated, emphasizing that both the AFN and relevant security agencies have been instructed to respond to any advocacy for such changes.
The Chief of Defence Staff expressed gratitude for the continued support and prayers from Nigerians, assuring that victory against any threats to the nation’s democracy is assured. This statement comes in response to concerns raised by the viral video advocating for military intervention, an issue the military has now addressed resolutely.
