The local government elections held on October 5, 2024, across Akwa Ibom’s 31 local government areas have ignited lively discussions, particularly due to the surprising victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Essien Udim Local Government Area, the home of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This outcome has shocked many within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A viral video initially claimed that the PDP candidate, Enobong Patrick Friday, won with 55,612 votes compared to APC’s 686. However, Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Mr. AniediAbasi Ikoiwak, later clarified that the official results showed the APC winning with 51,751 votes against the PDP’s 22,799. He dismissed the video, stating that the purported Returning Officer was not officially appointed and described the video as an attempt to mislead the public.
Political analysts suggest that the PDP’s concession of victory in Akpabio’s domain may have been a strategic move to spare him embarrassment. In a surprising gesture, Enobong Friday congratulated his APC opponent, emphasizing unity and governance over rivalry. This development hints at a potential political alliance between Governor Umo Eno and Akpabio, raising speculation about the future of state politics leading up to the 2027 elections.
While some PDP members deny any plans for Eno to defect to the APC, political observers note his conciliatory approach with Akpabio, contrasting the latter’s strained relationships with past leaders. Comments from political figures indicate a growing interest in an alliance that could reshape the political landscape in Akwa Ibom.
As both parties navigate these changes, the implications of this emerging alliance, including promises of political appointments for the PDP candidates, remain to be seen. The evolving dynamics could significantly impact the 2027 elections and beyond, with many in the state eager to see how this political landscape unfolds.
