On Monday, the South African government called on the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by mid-December. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni emphasized that the failure to do so would signify a “total failure” of global governance. Ntshavheni stressed the need for the global community to act and stop what the South African government describes as genocide in Gaza.
Israel maintains that it is defending itself in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas, resulting in 1,200 casualties. However, the South African government consistently characterizes Israel’s campaign in Gaza as “genocide.” Gaza’s Hamas-run government reports at least 13,000 Palestinian deaths, including 5,500 children, due to Israeli bombardments.
