SOMALIA FACES MOUNTING CRISIS AS FLOODS WREAK HAVOC, DEATH TOLL REACHES 50

Flash flooding in Somalia has claimed the lives of at least 50 people and displaced nearly 700,000 from their homes, according to a government official. The Horn of Africa region is grappling with heavy rainfall and floods attributed to the El Nino weather phenomenon, resulting in numerous fatalities and widespread displacement. In Somalia, bridges have been destroyed, and residential areas are submerged due to continuous downpours. The director of the Somali Disaster Management Agency cautioned on Monday about the potential for more flooding and increased casualties during the expected rains between November 21st and 24th.

The UN humanitarian agency OCHA reported on November 18 that the disaster has affected 1.7 million people in the region. The destruction of infrastructure has led to elevated prices of essential commodities. Save the Children, a British charity, stated on November 16 that thousands in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia have been compelled to leave their homes due to flash flooding. The Horn of Africa is recovering from the most severe drought in four decades, marked by multiple unsuccessful rainy seasons that left millions in need, causing extensive damage to crops and livestock.
