African leaders have been urged to adopt and champion values that will foster unity across the continent and promote peaceful coexistence among its people. This call was made by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chairman of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development (SCDDD), during an interview with Voice of Nigeria in Abuja.
Professor Gambari, who previously served as Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, emphasized the importance of leaders identifying areas of collaboration that would strengthen inter-country relationships and promote unity, democracy, and the economic well-being of African nations. He stressed the necessity of addressing and overcoming challenges that might hinder the continent’s rapid development, stating that African countries should move beyond the painful legacies of colonialism, slavery, and neglect. Instead, they should focus on common goals, especially the establishment of good governance, which is crucial for socio-economic progress.
He applauded the Nigerian government for its ongoing reforms aimed at improving democratic governance, particularly in the electoral process. Gambari also highlighted the need for increased attention to the welfare and capacity building of security agencies, ensuring that they are adequately equipped to protect the nation and contribute to its stability.
The SCDDD, according to Gambari, remains committed to research, advocacy, training, and policy analysis in areas such as conflict prevention, management, democratic development, and sustainable growth in Nigeria and across Africa. The center aims to enhance democratic and governance practices through advocacy and by offering context-specific solutions to government policymakers and non-state actors both in Nigeria and throughout Africa.
Professor Gambari further expressed his vision for Africa’s future, emphasizing the need for the continent to evolve into a prosperous, politically stable, and globally respected region driven by a culture of good governance.
In his interaction with Mallam Jibril Baba Ndace, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Gambari praised the leadership of Ndace, who he described as a man “who has come for the job.” He commended Voice of Nigeria for its pivotal role in promoting government policies and programs, both domestically and internationally, and expressed his desire to collaborate with the organization to further Nigerian projects. Gambari also affirmed his ongoing commitment to humanitarian services in the country.
The visit by Mallam Jibril Baba Ndace and the Voice of Nigeria management team to Gambari was to commemorate his 80th birthday. The Director-General extended his gratitude for Gambari’s invaluable contributions to Nigerian society and thanked him for agreeing to partner with Voice of Nigeria in the promotion of good governance and national initiatives.
