Nigeria has officially joined Ghana as one of the only African nations to compete in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, a renowned U.S. event that tests students’ spelling and vocabulary skills. For nearly two decades, Ghana has been the sole African representative at the Bee. This new chapter is made possible by the collaborative efforts of the Young Educators Foundation, which organizes the event in Ghana, and the Lucid Education Initiative, thereby enabling Nigeria to participate in the competition.
This partnership is set to foster a love for spelling and literacy among Nigerian youth, providing a significant platform to highlight their talents on an international stage. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is more than just a contest; it celebrates discipline, mastery of words, and academic excellence. It is anticipated that Nigeria’s involvement will not only shine a spotlight on its students and schools but also enhance cognitive skills, critical thinking, and mental agility among young learners. It will inspire curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for language and learning.
Ms. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, CEO of the Young Educators Foundation, expressed her excitement about Nigeria’s participation. “We aim to equip students with the skills to use words as powerful communication tools from an early age. We are elated that Nigeria will be joining Ghana in May of 2025, coinciding with the centenary anniversary of the Scripps Spelling Bee – a milestone worth noting for Nigeria’s participation,” she stated.
The upcoming national spelling contest in Nigeria will determine a champion who will earn a coveted spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May 2025. This opportunity highlights the critical role of literacy and spelling education among Nigerian students, particularly in major cities like Lagos and Abuja, where the initiative is focused.
Mr. Afolajimi Akinyoyenu, CEO of the Lucid Education Initiative, emphasized the broader significance of this program. “This initiative offers a platform for Nigerian youth to showcase their literacy prowess on a global stage, countering the outdated and erroneous narrative that the African child only hungers for food,” he remarked.
In the 2024 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, about 245 national competitors participated, including students from all 50 U.S. states, U.S. territories like Guam and Puerto Rico, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. International participants came from Ghana, the Bahamas, and Canada. In 2025, Nigeria will join this esteemed lineup, enhancing African representation in the competition.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a thrilling mental challenge, with spellers having just 75 seconds to ask questions and 90 seconds to spell each word. A single mistake can abruptly end a journey that involves years of dedication. The competition tests not only spelling precision but also a deep understanding of etymology and word nuances, requiring participants to navigate complex rules and pay close attention to detail.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the Scripps Spelling Competition is poised to transform Nigeria’s educational landscape, motivating young minds to achieve linguistic excellence on a global scale. This development marks a significant milestone in promoting literacy and academic excellence among Nigerian youth, reflecting the country’s commitment to nurturing educational achievements and enhancing its profile in the international academic community.
