Morocco achieved a historic milestone in 2024, welcoming a record 17.4 million tourists, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year, according to the country’s tourism ministry. Nearly half of the visitors were Moroccans residing abroad, reflecting a strong contribution from the diaspora.
Tourism remains a vital pillar of Morocco’s economy, contributing approximately 7% of its gross domestic product and serving as a crucial source of employment and foreign currency inflows.
The ministry noted that this year’s visitor numbers surpassed projections by two years, signaling robust growth in the sector. Looking ahead, Morocco aims to attract 26 million tourists by 2030, coinciding with its role as a co-host of the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Strategic Expansion and Record Revenue
To sustain its growth, Morocco has introduced additional air routes to key markets, promoted lesser-known domestic destinations, and invested in the renovation of its hospitality infrastructure. These measures have enhanced the country’s appeal to a diverse range of tourists.
Between January and November 2024, tourism revenues reached a record-breaking 104 billion dirhams, a 7.2% increase year-on-year, according to data from Morocco’s foreign exchange regulator.
The ministry’s ambitious targets and ongoing initiatives signal Morocco’s commitment to solidifying its position as a premier global travel destination while leveraging the tourism sector to drive economic development and international visibility.
