Kenyan President William Ruto has taken decisive action by dismissing all his ministers and the attorney-general with immediate effect, following widespread protests that prompted the withdrawal of an unpopular tax bill.
In a statement, President Ruto attributed the decision to “reflection, listening to Kenyans, and after holistic appraisal of my cabinet.” He emphasized his intention to embark on extensive consultations to establish a new, inclusive government structure.
Notably, the dismissal excludes the deputy president, who holds a constitutionally protected position and cannot be fired. Similarly unaffected is the prime cabinet secretary, who also serves as the foreign affairs minister.
The move comes amidst political unrest triggered by public dissatisfaction over economic policies and governance issues. President Ruto’s decision aims to address these challenges and potentially reshape his administration to better reflect national sentiments and aspirations.
