KENYA JOINS INTERNATIONAL EFFORT TO STABILIZE HAITI

On Thursday, the Kenyan parliament approved the dispatch of one thousand police officers to Haiti, a nation grappling with chaos and rampant gang violence, in line with a UN-endorsed initiative, despite facing widespread condemnation.

The Caribbean nation is besieged by gang-related unrest, which commands control over 80% of the capital, leading to a surge in serious crimes, as reported by the UN representative in the country.

Parliamentary vice-president Gladys Boos Shollei succinctly announced, “The ayes have it,” following a vocal vote by elected representatives.

However, the deployment is currently on hold due to a decision by the Nairobi High Court, which is yet to scrutinize an appeal filed by an opponent contending that the mission violates the constitution.

The Kenyan government has faced intense criticism for its choice to send police officers to Haiti, a highly volatile and hazardous nation.

Human rights organizations highlight concerns about the Kenyan police’s inclination to employ force, at times fatally, against civilians, posing a significant risk in a country where previous foreign interventions have been marred by violations of human rights.
