Jibrin Barau, the Acting Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament and Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, has reaffirmed the parliament’s dedication to fostering peace and prosperity across the region. Speaking at the close of the Inaugural Session of the Sixth Legislature of the Community Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria, Senator Barau emphasized the pivotal role of parliamentarians in championing the objectives of ECOWAS.
In his address, Senator Barau highlighted the weighty responsibilities entrusted to members of the parliament and underscored the necessity for quality representation, effective presence, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of ECOWAS. He emphasized the collective endeavor required to confront the significant challenges facing the region, urging parliamentarians to work together with intelligence, rigor, and determination.
Senator Barau also addressed the procedural challenges faced during the inaugural session, particularly the absence of the Togolese delegation required to produce the Speaker. Acknowledging the importance of restoring order to the parliament, he commended the application of the Doctrine of Necessity, which facilitated the election of four Deputy Speakers.
Expressing solidarity with the Togolese delegation, Senator Barau pledged full support for their swift inauguration to enable the election of a new Speaker. He thanked all members for their support and congratulated the selection committee for establishing balanced standing committees and drafting the Rules of Procedure for the Sixth Legislature.
In closing, Senator Barau urged parliamentarians to transcend differences and collaborate diligently to achieve tangible results for ECOWAS. The parliament deferred the adoption of the Rules of Procedure pending further scrutiny, signaling a commitment to thorough deliberation.
The inauguration of the Sixth Legislature was presided over by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, signifying a renewed commitment to regional cooperation and development.
