Nigeria’s Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olatubosun Oluyede, has paid heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, the late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, describing him as a selfless, passionate, and courageous leader who gave his all to the country. Oluyede spoke on Wednesday from the State House in Abuja, reflecting on Lagbaja’s profound contributions to Nigeria and urging the nation to honor his memory.
“It’s highly regrettable. The entire Nigerian Army is in a sorrowful mood because we have lost our leader,” Oluyede remarked. He acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu in efforts to aid the late General, emphasizing the country’s shared grief over the loss. “Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was known for his dedication and professionalism. He was a courageous and selfless leader, deeply passionate about Nigeria, and he led the Army with distinction.”
Lagbaja, who was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, served as Nigeria’s 23rd COAS and was a vital figure in national security efforts, especially in combating terrorism and banditry. Before his appointment as COAS, he was Chief of Operations (Army), overseeing critical security operations across the country.
Following his tribute at the State House, Lt. Gen. Oluyede visited the family of the late General at Flag Staff House in Niger Barracks, Abuja. Accompanied by Principal Staff Officers, Corps Commanders, and General Officers Commanding, Oluyede offered condolences to Mrs. Mariya Lagbaja and her children. He commended Lagbaja’s gallantry and enduring contributions, writing in the condolence register, “Lieutenant General Lagbaja, without doubt, gave his all to the service of our dear nation. This was evident in his dedication to duty and the legacies he had left behind.”
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5, 2024, at 56, had a career marked by dedication to Nigeria’s stability and security. Oluyede urged Nigerians to celebrate the life and service of the late General, saying, “For someone who has given his all for Nigeria, we need to celebrate him.”
Lagbaja’s passing is a solemn moment for the Nigerian Armed Forces, leaving behind a legacy that Oluyede described as irreplaceable, yet inspiring for future leaders. The late General’s commitment to duty and professionalism will be remembered as a significant part of Nigeria’s military history.
