The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his continued silence amidst the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. In a statement issued on Saturday by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party demanded that President Tinubu address the nation immediately and outline urgent steps to reduce petroleum prices, stabilize the naira, and ensure the provision of food, among other critical issues.
The PDP expressed concern that Tinubu’s silence is exacerbating public anxiety and sending a dangerous signal of insensitivity to the plight of citizens. The statement emphasized the importance of the government’s role in ensuring good governance, security, and welfare for its people.
“It is indeed worrisome that President Tinubu could remain silent as Nigerians are on the streets demanding good governance, protection, security, and welfare, which are the primary purposes of government,” the statement read. The PDP also highlighted the alarming incidents of violence, including assaults, shootings, and killings of unarmed protesters by security operatives allegedly controlled by the APC.
The PDP called on President Tinubu to:
- Address the nation and reassure citizens about measures to reduce the prices of petroleum products and food items.
- Recover over N50 trillion allegedly stolen by APC leaders.
- Reduce tariffs on essential goods and cut the cost of governance.
- Review all luxury items in his government and redirect recovered funds to programs benefiting Nigerians.
The opposition party insisted that with effective management of resources and investments in gas production, petrol prices should not exceed N200 per liter. They also demanded a thorough investigation into the reported killings of unarmed protesters by security operatives and urged security agencies to maintain high professionalism in their duties.
The PDP reiterated its call for Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding in their pursuit of a responsive government, criticizing the APC for failing to provide such leadership since taking power in 2015.
