The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced the cancellation of the 2024 International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations, citing solidarity with the #EndBadGovernance protesters who lost their lives during recent demonstrations. The decision also reflects concerns over the severe economic hardship affecting millions of Nigerians.
The protests, which took place from August 1-10, were driven by widespread dissatisfaction with economic conditions and governance. The demonstrations turned violent in several areas, particularly in the northern region of Nigeria, with reports of security forces allegedly using live ammunition against protesters. A tragic incident on August 6 involved a soldier who “accidentally” killed a protester in Zaria, Kaduna State.
In a statement released on Monday, NYCN President Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo expressed the council’s deep concern over the economic crisis gripping the nation. “The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) announces the cancellation of this year’s International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations in solidarity with the #EndBadGovernance protesters who recently lost their lives,” the statement read. Sukubo emphasized that the cancellation also stems from the need to focus on addressing the pressing economic challenges rather than holding celebratory events.
The NYCN has submitted a detailed position paper to key government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, and the National Assembly. The document contains recommendations aimed at alleviating the current hardships and enhancing the role of Nigerian youth in national security and development.
In their appeal to President Bola Tinubu, the NYCN urged swift action on various youth intervention programs and economic relief measures. They highlighted the need for transparency and accountability, improved public transportation, agricultural support, access to healthcare, and education and skill development initiatives.
The cancellation of the IYD celebrations underscores the NYCN’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of Nigerian youth and addressing the critical issues facing the nation.
