The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the introduction of price control templates to address the rising costs of food items across the country. In a statement signed by National Secretary Achike Chude following a virtual meeting of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC), the NUJ emphasized the need to curb food inflation to improve the living standards of Nigerians.
The Union praised state governors who have initiated price control measures, recognizing these efforts as essential for ensuring food affordability nationwide. While condemning the acts of violence during the recent nationwide hunger protests, the NUJ also commended state governments that imposed curfews to restore peace and normalcy in affected areas.
The Union strongly criticized the unprofessional conduct of security personnel during the protests, particularly their assaults on journalists. The NEC insisted that security personnel must act responsibly and professionally during such events and urged journalists to prioritize their safety while on duty.
The NUJ also addressed internal matters, extending the deadline for state councils to pay the 2023 Professional Fees and Check Off Dues to December 31, 2023. State councils yet to make payments in 2024 were granted a six-week extension. As a result, the NEC unanimously agreed to extend the tenure of the current Central Working Committee (CWC) until the Triennial Delegate Conference.
The NEC adopted November 28-30, 2024, as the dates for the forthcoming Triennial Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State. A nine-member Credentials Committee, chaired by Comrade Michael Ikeogwu with Comrade Ademu Seidu as Secretary, was constituted to oversee the election process for the next CWC. The NEC also passed a vote of confidence in NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, MFR, and the CWC, commending their leadership for elevating the Union to new heights of excellence.
