NLC Convenes Emergency Meeting Following Police Invasion of Headquarters

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting for Saturday in response to the recent invasion of its headquarters in Abuja. The meeting, set to be held virtually at 4 p.m., will focus on determining the appropriate response to the incident and other related matters.

The invasion, which took place late Wednesday night, saw heavily armed police officers and others in plainclothes storm the NLC headquarters, known as Labour House, just before 9 p.m. The security operatives reportedly ransacked the Second and 10th floors of the building, seizing several materials, including books from a bookshop, which they claimed were used to incite and organize recent protests.

The Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) has joined a growing number of organizations and individuals condemning the invasion, expressing concern over the actions of the security forces. The NLC, in its response, described the raid as an alarming breach of its rights and an attempt to intimidate the labor movement. The outcome of the NEC meeting is eagerly awaited as labor leaders strategize on their next steps.
