The Federal Government has praised the Super Eagles for their courage, unity, and determination at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite their narrow semi-final defeat to Morocco that ended Nigeria’s campaign. The national team exited the tournament on Wednesday after a tense penalty shootout in Rabat, where the Atlas Lions booked their place in the final.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended the Eagles for representing Nigeria with dignity and resilience. He said their performance throughout the tournament reflected the values that define the Nigerian people, regardless of the final result.

“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” Idris said. He added that the highs and lows of football do not diminish the pride Nigerians feel for the team, whose fighting spirit inspired millions across the country and beyond.

“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high. Learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger,” the minister said, assuring the players that the nation stands firmly behind them.

The match had ended 0-0 after extra time before heading to penalties, where Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged the hero. He saved crucial kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, paving the way for Youssef En-Nesyri to score the decisive penalty that ignited jubilant celebrations at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

With the victory, Morocco advanced to face Senegal in Sunday’s final. The Lions of Teranga secured their spot earlier in the day with a 1-0 win over Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, courtesy of a Sadio Mane strike.

Despite the disappointment, the Federal Government urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Eagles as they regroup and prepare for future competitions.
