National Gallery of Arts Director-General Vows to Enhance Visual Art Sector under Tinubu’s Agenda

Mr. Ahmed Sodangi, the Director-General of the National Gallery of Arts (NGA), has reiterated his dedication to revitalizing the visual art sector in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’ His commitment was expressed during the inauguration of the “Landscapes and Flavours” art exhibition featuring the works of Mark Rwang, Pauline Malize, and Katurag Chinyio in Abuja.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of creativity and imagination in shaping human experiences globally, Sodangi highlighted the exhibition’s significance in showcasing diverse themes and techniques. He affirmed plans to prioritize artists by implementing innovative strategies and incentives to foster a conducive environment for artistic growth and sector development.

Sodangi underscored the transformative power of art to inspire, uplift, and connect with humanity, commending the exhibiting artists for their passion and dedication. He emphasized the exhibition’s potential to evoke emotions, stimulate dialogue, and foster appreciation for beauty, reflecting on the profound impact of art on individual perspectives and societal discourse.

In her remarks, Ms. Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, lauded the exhibition for celebrating the creativity of Nigerian artists and promoting cultural diversity. She emphasized the socio-economic significance of creativity, art, and culture in attracting foreign investment and fostering social cohesion.

Prof. Jerry Buhari, Chair of the occasion and a Fine Arts professor at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, urged the ministry to recognize the economic value of art and culture beyond monetary terms. He applauded the artists for capturing the beauty and diversity of Nigeria’s natural environment, despite prevailing challenges, and called for greater support and recognition for the culture sector.
